Sleep Disorder Statistics Reflect Surprising Consequences

If you have a sleep disorder, you may be surprised to know that you are at risk for many other disorders and diseases. Some common side effects of sleep disorders are hypertension, Attention Deficit Disorder, depression and gastric reflux. Not only are these disorders dangerous, but they can affect the quality of life that one lives. The effect of sleep disorders on whether or not you will have one of the aforementioned problems is reflected in sleep disorder statistics.

Sleep Disorder Statistics Reflect the Truth

Sleep disorder statistics reflect the devastating effects of sleep disorders on daily life. Approximately 28 per cent of patients who were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) also displayed symptoms of Obtrusive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Similarly, 30 per cent of people diagnosed with hypertension also have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Approximately 29 per cent of people who have sleep disorders are also depressed. One sleep disorder statistic reflects what could be a cause of sleep disorders; 38 per cent of women who are obese show symptoms of a sleep disorder. Additional sleep disorder statistics state that 88 per cent of people who have nighttime gastric reflux also display symptoms of a sleep disorder.

Symptoms and More Statistics

Symptoms of a sleep disorder, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) vary. Some symptoms of this particular sleep disorder include: irregular and loud snoring, loss of energy, weight gain and obesity, frequent urination during the night, anxiety and depression, daytime sleeping, falling asleep at the wheel, and getting headaches in the morning. Obstructive Sleep Apnea can be extremely dangerous; it occurs when the heart stops briefly during sleep. This can happen up to 120 times per hour, and each time could last anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds. Because the body does not receive enough oxygen during this time, it often results in even more problems.

Sleep disorder statistics reflect the severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. An example of these sleep disorder statistics include that 18 million people in the United States have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). However, the sleep disorder statistics regarding the amount of people with sleep disorders who are treated are somewhat discouraging: only 5 per cent of people with sleep disorders actually receive treatment for them!

This means that 95 per cent of people with sleep disorders are not diagnosed or treated for their sleep disorder! That is a scary sleep disorder statistic. 70 per cent of people with sleep disorders have stated that their sleep disorder negatively affects their quality of life or current health status.
